Growing Mental Toughness with Chicago FC United

Growing Mental Toughness with FC United Soccer Club

At Grow Sport Psychology, we believe mental toughness is just as important as physical preparation. It’s the skill that allows athletes to stay composed under pressure, bounce back from mistakes, and consistently perform at their best. Recently, we partnered with FC United Soccer Club to deliver a series of workshops and on-field breakout sessions designed to give players practical tools to strengthen their mental game.

Laying the Foundation: Mental Toughness Workshops

Our classroom-style sessions focused on helping athletes understand that mental toughness is not an innate talent—it’s a skill that can be trained. We introduced athletes to the Four C’s of Mental Toughness—Confidence, Control, Composure, and Consistency—and guided them through activities to explore what these traits look like in practice.

Highlights included:

  • Confidence Building: Athletes practiced positive self-talk, affirmations, and visualization, while also creating a “Confidence Resume” to remind themselves of past successes.
  • Control: Players learned the importance of focusing on what’s in their control—effort, attitude, and preparation—while letting go of distractions like referees, weather, or opponents.
  • Mistake Management: Strategies such as “reset cues” and quick refocus techniques helped athletes learn how to recover faster from setbacks.

These workshops provided the foundation for applying mental performance skills in real, game-like scenarios.

Taking It to the Field: Breakout Sessions

To bring the lessons to life, we facilitated four interactive breakout stations on the field. Each 12–15minute activity was designed to simulate the pressures athletes face during competition, while building communication, trust, and resilience.

  • Station 1: Blind Obstacle Course
Players, blindfolded and guided by teammates, navigated distractions while learning to trust communication and block out outside noise—just like staying composed under pressure in a game.
  • Station 2: Weighted Backpack Drill
Athletes carried “invisible weights” representing negative thoughts or outside pressures, then compared performance with and without the burden. The activity highlighted how mental “weights” impact play, and the importance of letting go to perform freely.
  • Station 3: Head, Shoulders, Knees, Cup
Players paired up The announcer yells different variations for a couple seconds, once the announcer says cup, the two people try to grab the cup and whoever grabs the cup first wins.
  • Station 4: Head/Catch Game
This reaction-based game challenged players to respond quickly and adapt after mistakes, reinforcing the value of resilience, quick recovery, and celebrating small wins amidst setbacks.

Why It Matters for You

Here’s the truth: physical skills will only take you so far. What separates good players from great ones is the ability to stay locked in when the pressure hits. Mental toughness gives you the edge:

·      You recover faster after mistakes.

·      You trust yourself and your teammates more.

·      You compete with confidence, even against tough opponents.

Why It Matters for Parents and Coaches

Developing mental toughness is not just about creating better athletes—it’s about preparing young people to face challenges in all areas of life. For parents and coaches, supporting athlete sin building these skills means fostering resilience, encouraging positive communication, and helping them manage both successes and setbacks.

By combining structured workshops with practical, on-field application, our work with FC United provided players with tangible strategies they can use immediately in training and competition. More importantly, it reinforced the idea that growth comes through effort, support, and a willingness to embrace challenges.
